There she was, finally safe in his arms. Till now, he had always watched her from afar, dreaming of this very moment for years, suffering sleepless nights, restless days and a heart tortured with longing and despair. Now she was in his arms right where she belongs, peaceful and serene where nobody can disturb them.

They once took her away from him, those filthy cops, and locked him up from the rest of the world. They tried to do it again a while ago, but he outsmarted them this time. Did they really think they could get him to go back to that mental asylum and suffer taking all those medications and talk sessions with that idiotic psychiatrist Shim Changmin? Did they think he would let Yunho, that bastard Yunho, try to steal his Eliza from him and get away with it unpunished? They thought wrong, gravely wrong. Little did they know he was prepared this time. He had spent his entire time at that mind-numbingly stupid mental institution planning every inch of his moves; from getting Eliza back and blowing up those who tried to wreck his happiness into tiny smithereens.

He smirked. Serves them right for being in his way. They dare belittle his intelligence. They thought they had him trapped in that alley with only an axe as a weapon, when in truth it is where exactly he wants them to be. They should have known that a top university medicine student like himself knows what makes the human body ticks, and how deadly cyanide is if inhaled in gas form. Making that poison gas and throwing it to explode in front of those filthy cops’ faces, then jumping inside the dumpster where he kept Eliza to wear the gas masks he hid there and wait till the poisoned smoke cleared up… it was like taking candy from a baby.
Now, on top of a building overlooking the whole of Seoul, he smiled, gazing lovingly at face of the woman he had loved and will always love, ignoring the pool of red sticky liquid they were both bathing in. He couldn’t help but think of how beautiful she was, much more beautiful than he had ever imagined seeing her up close; much more beautiful than the view of the busy city night lights, much more beautiful than the full moon above them … He lifted up his bloodied hands and traced the contours of her face. His fingers left a trace of the dark liquid on her pale lifeless face, but he couldn’t care less.

Because she was his, at long last. No longer would he have to forage her belongings to satiate his hungry heart. No longer would he have to keep himself hidden when he follows her. No longer would he have to watch her sleep cozily while he endures the bitter cold outside. Because he knows she would not be going anywhere now, not with her legs cut off like that. No longer would he have to watch her from afar, wondering what it would be like to see her up close; wondering what it would be like to hold her close to his heart, because there she is safe and secured in his arms where she belongs.

The wind blew softly and her hair swayed along with it, covering both their faces. Jaejoong smiled and brushed her hair away from their faces and tucked it to her ear. He finally noticed the coldness of her skin, the pale whiteness that replaced the once rosy cheeks and cherry lips he had always dreamed of touching.

“Are you cold, my love?” he asked.

Nothing responded to his question but the howling of the wind that was magnified ten times through the empty windows of the building they were on, giving him a false impression of an answer which no one but him could hear.

“Really?” he smiled at the non-existent response as he tightened his embrace and asked, “Is this warm enough, then?”

Again, only the wind responded to his question.

“I love you, too…” he whispered to her ear, voice thick with emotion, obsession. “I have always loved you… You drive me crazy, do you know that, Eliza? Ever since the first time I laid my eyes on you, I knew you were destined to be mine. I’ve tried everything I could to get close to you, but you wouldn’t let me. You kept shooing me away. Did you know how hurt I was when you do that? But don’t worry, I forgive you. You didn’t know you were going to be mine back then, right? That’s why I waited. I just stood from afar, watching you, containing myself, because I know you wouldn’t like it if I stayed close to you. I didn’t want to make you angry. So I just waited. I followed you everywhere for a long long time, waiting for you to realize that you’re the one for me, and I’m the one for you…

But year after year passed… and you still didn’t know… I was growing tired of waiting… But I pressed myself to wait. But then that bastard Yunho appeared… He tried to take you away from me! Him becoming your boyfriend made me so angry. That night when the two of you checked in that hotel alone… did you know how livid I was? Of course you didn’t know… That’s when I decided I was going to make you see. I was going to show you how much I love you, and make you see that no one could love you more than I do, even if I had to force you!

So that night, I waited for you at your home. I was going to tell you everything I have kept for so long, and make you love me back. I waited for hours in front of your lawn. I even bought a ring. See?”

He reached inside his pocket and fished out a ring, the band made out of gold adorned with little diamonds encircling a bigger diamond. He took Eliza’s right hand and slid it onto her ring finger. “I spent my entire life savings on that… It’s yours to keep.” He stared at it lovingly for a while, before resuming to hugging the petite figure to his chest and continuing his story.

“I was very excited that night. But my excitement turned to rage when you came home with that Yunho. I watched quietly while the two of you made out inside his car for more than twenty minutes… I was seething with fury! I knew couldn’t take it anymore. I knew I had to do something. I knew I had to kill him to prevent him from stealing you away from me! So that night, I disabled his car’s breaks when you invited him inside your house to continue what you were doing. After an hour, he finally zoomed off with his car. I knocked on your door. But you didn’t let me inside. So I had to break it. I had to make you see that we were fated to be together! I took you to my apartment to make you see how much I love you! But those filthy cops… That bastard Yunho’s car crashed alright, but he just didn’t die! He even told the police I kidnapped you! He just had to–”

His story abruptly stopped, his ears picking up non-existent sobbing coming from the lifeless body he was holding. Thinking he was the cause, he whispered soothingly, “I’m sorry, my dear Eliza… I didn’t mean to yell at you… I’m not angry at you, love. I can never be angry at you no matter how much you’ve hurt me in the past. The most important thing is that you’re here with me. Here with me now…”

Unbeknownst to him, a tear escaped from his eyes as he nuzzled his face closer to her shoulder, the tear transferred to the lifeless one’s face.

He frowned as he saw that drop of liquid on his beloved’s face. He reached it with his bloodied hands and wiped it. Curiously, he out it in his mouth and tasted it.

“Such bitter tears…” he held her tighter, the coppery taste clinging on his mouth. “There, there, my Eliza… Don’t cry now. From now on, we’ll be together forever. No one can take you away from me ever again. No one… Because you’re mine and mine alone!”

*

Bright lights emitted by the searing sun momentarily blinded him as he opened his eyes from his deep slumber. His head ached badly, his muscles tired and sore. He slowly sat up straight, wondering what had happened. The last thing he remembered was that he was at Dr. Shim’s office from his prison cell for their weekly sessions to cure his… illness… He also distinctly remembered that Dr. Shim was telling him something about Eliza before his vision blurred and he fell into the darkness of oblivion.

Eliza…

Her name alone sent needles of pain to his heart. How much he wanted so badly to see her again, one last time, even just a peek, but according to Dr. Shim, he had to stay away from her. If he comes too close, he might endanger her life and a few more others’. And it’s better to know that she’s safe and happy with Yunho and suffer the torment of not seeing her, than to bring any form of harm to her. Curse this illness of his.

Shaking his head and concentrating to the current situation he was in, he looked up and was alarmed to see that there wasn’t any roof hanging above him. He looked around… He wasn’t in Dr. Shim’s office, nor was he on his cell… In fact he wasn’t any place he was familiar with. He figured he was on a rooftop of a building. He looked down and became more alarmed with what he saw…

Dried blood heavily stained his shirt, pants and arms. “Oh no… Please no…” he murmured more to the sky than himself.

He snapped his head around and around, his worst fear slowly becoming reality. A bloody trail starting from where he was standing guided his eyes to wander to a bloody axe laid on one corner… along with a large mass of an unrecognizable thing that looked a lot like… like…

His insides churned and his world began to spin as his face turned ghostly white. There she was, on the corner of the rooftop, her entire body bathing in dried blood and her legs… her legs… amputated…

“Oh my god…” he breathed out. He rushed to her, ignoring his spinning vision and throbbing head, hoping against all hope that she was still alive, still breathing. But no such luck. A medicine student like him knows with one look whether a person is alive or dead. And the woman with amputated legs bathing in her own blood was certainly not alive.

He picked her rigid body and stared at her slightly blue face. “Oh my god…” his voice barely coming out from his mouth as he gently touched her face. “Eliza… Eliza! What have I done to you?! ELIZA!!!”

An ear-splitting scream ripped out from his chest, as he hugged the body tightly down and broke down in pain and grief.
